Newborn Care Q & A

When does a newborn need a well-check?

A newborn benefits from a well-check at 3-5 days of age. This is just after you’re discharged from the hospital and may have questions about the baby’s health or your own health. Dr. Alzalam can answer questions about feedings, formula, and breastfeeding, too.

Babies grow and develop quickly, so they need frequent visits following the first newborn visit. You should plan on seeing the doctor when your newborn reaches:

  • 1 month
  • 2 months
  • 4 months
  • 6 months

You’ll also have a schedule of visits for your baby at 1 year and beyond. At each of these visits, the staff at Zalam Medical Center measure your baby’s length, weight, and head circumference to make sure they’re growing properly. Plus, any blood tests and immunizations are provided to screen and protect them from disease.

You’ll be asked questions about your infant’s eating and sleeping habits. If you’re breastfeeding, he’ll ask about your milk supply and feeding schedule.

Bring up any questions you have about your baby’s development or behavior, too. Make a list in advance so you don’t forget anything.

What is involved in a baby’s comprehensive physical?

During a newborn check, Dr. Alzalam checks your infant’s entire body to make sure they’re healthy. He’ll assess the soft spots on your baby’s head and check their eyes and ears as well. He’ll look for early tooth eruption, any birthmarks, or rashes.

The doctor also listens to your baby’s heart and observes respiration. He’ll feel your child’s abdomen to make sure there are no enlarged organs or an umbilical hernia. He also checks your infant’s hips for range of motion. The external genitalia are also examined to make sure there is no sign of infection or irregular development.

What do growth measurements say about my baby’s health?

At a newborn wellness check, Dr. Alzalam measures the baby’s length, weight, and head circumference. When plotted on a growth chart, the doctor can determine if your baby is growing normally and how they compare to other babies their age.

Why should I schedule a newborn check?

A newborn check provides you with peace of mind, plus it’s an important part of preventive health care for your baby. Immunizations protect your child from serious diseases. As your baby grows older, Dr. Alzalam can address issues like eating regular food and safety in the home.

Your newborn deserves a healthy start to life. Schedule your newborn exam at Zalam Medical Center by calling or booking online.
